How to Prepare for a Major Move

Blog / How to Prepare for a Major Move

Moving from one bedsit to the next when you are a student and all your possessions fit into a medium-sized backpack is not a difficult proposition but later on, once you have started a family and filled a 4-bedroom property with things that you treasure, moving home can be a very traumatic experience. However, with careful planning and a flexible attitude, you can take all the stress out of a major relocation and you may even enjoy it! To find out how to prepare for a big move, read on.

Getting Ready for the Big Day

The actual day of your move should not involve much hard work on your part, not if you plan properly and follow the checklist below.

  • Throw out Unwanted Items – If you have not had a good sort out of your cupboards and drawers in a long while, now is the time to correct this oversight. Packing, loading, and transporting piles of junk halfway across the country, only to chuck it out once you are settled in your new home, is a waste of both your time and your money.
  • Decide Where Your Furniture Will Go – Visualise the interior of your new property as you examine the furniture you own. Think about where you are going to put each piece once you move in and if there are any pieces that will simply not fit on your new property, make arrangements to dispose of them as soon as possible. If they are valuable, sell them, if not, throw them away. Whatever you do, do not pay to have your tables, cabinets, chairs and other items of furniture transported to your new home if there will be no room for them. As with your unwanted items from above, doing so would result in unnecessary expenditure that could easily avoid having been avoided.
  • Find the Right Removal Company – Unless you fancy hiring a truck, loading it with all your heavy furniture and other possessions, and driving it all to your new home, you are going to need to find a team of removalists that you can trust. Discuss your requirements with a number of local firms and request a quotation from each one. Go with the team that appears to be the most professional and that offers to help you complete the move for a reasonable price.
  • Purchase Packing Materials or Use a Firm That Does Everything for You – You are going to need to pack all your cutlery, crockery, glassware, and smaller personal possessions before you move so the sooner you acquire the packing materials that you need, the better. If you can’t bear the thought of spending all that time on a task that is boring at best and mind-numbing at worst, hire a removal company that will do it all for you!

Unless you have a licence to drive large trucks, you will almost certainly need to hire a local Perth-based transport company.  Be sure to plan ahead if you want everything to go smoothly.
