8 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR MOVE EASIER

Blog / 8 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR MOVE EASIER

Let’s face it, moving is never something to look forward to. Just the thought of finding boxes, packing your belongings, wrapping breakables and carrying a hundred things up and down is enough to send anyone straight to bed. Unfortunately, for most people, there’s no getting around it if you’re moving to a new place. You’ll have to try to stay positive by thinking about the excitement of new beginnings, and a bit of “out with the old and in with the new” philosophy. LESSEN THE STRESS OF MOVING WITH THESE TOP TIPS FOR PACKING AND MOVING YOUR HOME.

Here are a few useful tips on how to pack your home and make your move as easy as possible.

1. PLAN AHEAD

The first thing you need to do is get organised and plan your move ahead of time. Make a checklist of things you have to do a month, week and days before D-day. Sticking to a list and preparing everything properly will make your move run smoother and you will be less likely to forget important things.

2. HIRE MOVERS

You might think that you and a few strong friends can easily move your furniture but you’ll soon learn that it’s quite a task. Save yourself some anxiety and a few injuries by booking a professional moving company a month in advance. It will take a big weight off your shoulders to know that carrying that heavy couch is not your problem. Professional movers have special tools and techniques to move heavy items of furniture, so rather leave it to the experts.

3. BOXES AND TAPE

When it comes to packing, you can never have too many boxes or too much tape. Whether you get used boxes at your nearest grocery store or contact a professional moving company to provide you with new boxes, make sure you have a lot of boxes in different shapes and sizes.

Start gathering used newspapers, it’s a great substitute for bubble wrap when you need to wrap breakables such as glass and porcelain. Add a few rolls of very strong tape and you’re ready to start packing.

4. LABELS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND

It might feel unnecessary but trust us on this one. When you unpack, you’ll thank yourself for labelling all the different boxes. Label boxes and write in a notebook what each box contains or write it directly on the box.

5. DON’T BUY NEW GROCERIES

A few weeks before the move, start using the food from your refrigerator and try to get by without buying new groceries like sauces and salts. When you buy perishables, make sure you’ll be able to finish them before the move.

6. DON’T BE A HOARDER

There’s no better time than the present to de-clutter your life. When you start packing, put a “donate” box to the side and use it to throw things in that you don’t use anymore. The fewer things you have to move, the better.

7. HOW TO PACK

When you finally start packing, try to utilise as many of the items you “have to move” like suitcases and containers by filling them with clothes or light items. Additional padding is always a good idea, so keep blankets and towels handy for extra padding.

When you’re filling boxes, put the heavy items in first with the lighter ones on top. Try to distribute weight evenly throughout your boxes and don’t make boxes too heavy – you don’t want a box to break or someone to cave under the weight. Try to limit your heavier items to smaller boxes. Always wrap your breakables with paper or bubble wrap before packing them in a box.

8. OVERNIGHT BAG

Moving day is usually exhausting and the last thing you want to do at the end of it is to struggle to find your toiletries and clothes. You most probably won’t be able to unpack everything the same day you move so your best option is to pack an overnight bag. Fill the bag with your essentials, toiletries, pyjamas and one or two outfits for the next day.

On moving day, be ready for the movers and whatever you do, don’t leave your packing to the last minute. If all fails, Adlam Transport & Removals Perth offers a full pack-and-wrap service so give us a call.

Happy moving.
