5 survival tips for moving during the festive season

Blog / 5 survival tips for moving during the festive season

Are you planning to move just before Christmas? If you were to tell most people this, the general response would be ‘Don’t do it’. The added pressure to get organised around the silly season may seem daunting, but it can be done, and you can still look forward to a magical Christmas.

1. Stay ahead of Christmas closures

At this time of the year, timing is everything! Most businesses take time off at the end of the year, so you can expect delays virtually everywhere during the shutdown periods.

If you’re hiring a removalist company in Perth, then make sure you book ahead and check to see when their services are available. Adlam Transport will be closed on the 25th – 26th of December and will resume our usual hours on the 27th of December.

The same goes for any tradies you might need. Do you need to get your locks changed? Are there any repairs or renovations you want to have done? Find out how long your project will take and whether it can realistically be achieved before your move date.

2. Get organised with a to-do list

This is something you should do no matter what time of the year you’re moving, but it’s even more so essential around Christmas time.

With so many other things on your mind it’s easy to forget what needs to be done. And while picking up the phone to get something rectified straight away generally isn’t a problem, sometimes it might not be possible over the festive season.

We’re not just Perth’s leading removals company, we also offer packing services, so if you do find yourself running out of time – help is at hand.

3. Get your utilities switched on

Have you sorted out your electricity, water, gas and telephone line?

If you can’t live without your Wi-Fi then get onto it as soon as you can. Businesses that are open over the festive season usually work with skeleton staff, so whilst you may be able to get in contact with them, actually getting the work done may take longer than usual. So, if you don’t want to be left in the dark with no Christmas lights, or turkey roasting in the oven make sure you’re on top of it!

4. Be prepared at the other end

Much of what you’re concentrating on is making sure everything is packed and ready to go. But what about when you get to your new home? A removal company can make your moving process much easier.

What we suggest is to have a family member guide the movers (be it professional removalists or family friends) to place your boxes in the appropriate rooms. Dumping the boxes in one area of the house is just going to make the unpacking phase that much harder. Concentrate on unpacking your essentials and then switch your focus onto your Christmas celebrations. Which brings us to our next tip!

5. Decorate & celebrate

Don’t fall short on the spirit of Christmas just because you’re moving – especially if you have kids! Small children will feel overwhelmed moving in the first instance so you don’t want them to miss out on this special time of the year too.

When packing, make sure you label your Christmas decoration boxes clearly and set them aside during the move so you can access them quickly. When the moving is done, unpack what you need and then organise your Christmas celebrations – everything else can wait!

We hope these tips help you along the way during your festive move, and if you do get stuck – we’re here to help!
